The Cell Phone Case You Should Avoid at All Costs

As your trusted source for cell phone news, I have an important message to share with all smartphone users. Did you know that using a phone case can significantly increase your exposure to radiation? Yes, that’s right! While cases are designed to protect your phone from damage, they can weaken the signal and raise your radiation exposure.

The U.S. has more cell phones than people, and with the widespread use of smartphones, form-fitting cases have become a multi-million dollar business. However, the government does not require phone manufacturers to consider the effect of cases when they conduct compliance tests to meet the FCC’s allowable radiation exposure limits. This means that the exposure limits are not being met when a phone is used with a case.

Research conducted by case-maker Pong Research and submitted to the FCC showed that three models of cases made by competing companies increased the phones’ Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) by 20-to-70 percent. SAR is the amount of radiation absorbed by the user’s body, and increasing it beyond the allowable limits can have serious health consequences.

Not only can a case increase your exposure to radiation, but it can also obstruct the phone’s antenna and make the phone work harder to transmit its signal, causing battery power to wane more quickly. This means that your phone may run out of battery faster than it should.

Furthermore, there are detachable cases marketed as anti-radiation and EMF blocking that claim to protect you from radiation exposure. However, our research has shown that a detachable case could decrease a cell phone’s signal strength by as much as 90 percent, making it even more harmful for users.

Therefore, we urge smartphone users to be cautious when using phone cases and to consider the possible consequences of using a case that claims to protect against radiation. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is calling on the FCC to update its testing guidelines to take account of the widespread use of smartphone cases, and to ensure that cell phones covered by cases meet the exposure limits.

In the absence of meaningful action by the Commission, we offer consumers tips on how to reduce their exposure to cell phone radiation. These include using speakerphone or a wired headset, keeping the phone away from your body while it’s transmitting, and reducing your phone use whenever possible.

We hope that this information helps you make informed decisions about your smartphone use and ensures your safety. Stay safe and informed!
